RAKU!
Instructor: Cynthia "CJ" Jones
$90
Raku is the ancient technique of heating ceramic work in a hot kiln, then removing it while it is red hot and plunging it into a reduction chamber filled with combustible materials. This produces the blackened smoke effect so often seen and, depending on the glazes used, iridescent rainbow colors and marvelous visible crackle effects. Results are immediate and you will be able to take your finished work home that day!
You will need 2 to 3 bisqued stoneware pieces, no larger than 10” across and 12” high. These should be sturdy pieces which can withstand thermal shock. Preferably grogged stoneware. Your work must be glazed 24 hours before the workshop. Please contact Rebecca at 520-241-5481 regarding the special raku glaze to use. Closed toe shoes and all natural fibers in clothing are required. Nothing synthetic. Wear or bring a long sleeve garment (also natural fiber) if you wish to remove your work from the kiln yourself. Or you may let us do it for you. Either way, this is a marvelous experience!
You are encouraged to bring water and sun protection.
